A registration consisting of two numerals denoting the district (rayon) or city, a hyphen, two letters, a hyphen and three numerals (lead zeros are used). Letters are issued in the order A to H, X, J to P, R to V and Z. Plates may be one line or two line; on the left of the registration on private car plates is a wavy Azerbaijani flag above the letters AZ.

Motorcycle since 2001

Since about 2001 motorcycles have had black on reflective white two line plates with the flag over AZ to the left of the district code, a hyphen and a serial letter over the three-digit number. In probably 2011 the plates became longer and lower with the district code above the letter and the number. In 2012 the new style plates were introduced having the RFID box at top right.

ZA-ZX trailers (since about 2001 they have had normal style plates); foreign owned trailers have similar plates in black on reflective yellow with reserved code ZC.
