Who, where and when?

Using iProtect™ give the permissions who has access to where in the building and at what times. Access is granted based on the following three key words: Who, Where, and When. (W.W.W.) In your organisation, who, when and when, determines gets access.

But before you start this, you must first be able to get some definitions of concepts that are widely used in access control.

  • Card: A card can be a card, a paper barcode card, bio metrics or a tag. The card somehow contains a code. This unique code is read by the reader.

  • Reader: A reader is a device that reads and compares the unique code of the card with the data about that card in the database. Depending on the data in the database, the door or barrier is opened or remains closed.

  • Time zone: A time zone is a weekly schedule, which consists of several time periods. A time period has a start and end time.

Access is granted based on the 3 W's: Who, Where and When.

The Who - is defined in card groups. A card with one or more card groups hangs below a person or visitor. With this card group(s) you give the rights to the person or visitor.

The Where - is defined in reader groups. In a building you often have multiple sections and or floors where several readers are present. Here you can bundle several readers and turn them into one reader group. Each reader can be part of any number of reader groups.

The When - is determined by defining time zones. For example, a certain group of people can access Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM and no more after that. The same reader may also be accessible to another group at all times.

We need to link these 3 profiles together to give access to a person or visitor.  This is recorded in the Admittance. Admittance is a link of a card group to a reader group and a time zone. The diagram below is a representation of the relationships between the concepts introduced here.

In iProtect, this can be found under Access | Settings | Admittance.

The menu is designed in such a way that creating a new access profile can be created from top to bottom. You create a Card Group, then a reader group and timezone. In the Admittance everything comes together. In order to work unambiguously, it is useful to keep the names the same.

In the Admittance, all 3 W's are now linked together. In iProtect, it is structured in such a way that you assign a card group to a card regarding the Admittance. You can do this by adding a card group to the relevant card. You can add multiple card groups under the card.

This card has now been given the access rights to always go through the front door. Present the pass to the reader and iProtect will now give access. If this is not the case then you should look into the transactions of iProtect for what the reason is.
