1 The product

The Sirius i-series card reader is a versatile card reader which supports multiple card technologies and communication protocols. In addition, this card reader is able to support different technologies simultaneously like Mifare classic and DESFire EV1.

The card reader is equipped with a function to automatically adjust the antenna on and off when no activity takes place around the card reader. The detection is based on proximity.
The purpose of this functionality is to create a card reader as energy efficient as possible and only activate the antenna when a person or card is detected near to the card reader.
This manual provides the necessary information concerning the installation instructions, mounting and use of the card reader which is supplied as standard.

The Sirius i-series card reader:

1.1 Sticker i-serie

On the back of the card reader a sticker placed.
This sticker features a QR code.
After scanning this QR code, all necessary information will be downloaded automatically.

1.2 Spacers

Several types of Spacers have been developed for specific purposes. It can make the card
reader more robust for external influences but it can also be useful when installing the Sirius
card reader on existing plants.

801-6101: Sirius i30 Spacer
801-6102: Sirius i30 Spacer wide
801-6107: Sirius i30 Mounting plate for Sirius i30 spacer protector (801-6109)
801-6109: Sirius i30 Spacer protector
801-6110: Sirius i30 Spacer cardholder

1.3 Default reader configurations

When using a default Sirius i-series card reader, four configurations are possible The configurations are described in the paragraphs below.

Remark: For more information about the additional options, please contact your contact at TKH Security.

1.3.1 Polyx/Orbit Mifare- MifareDesfire

Part number: 801-5101

Standard communication:

  • A Polyx based on RS485

  • An Orbit based on Clock/Data - MIFARE Classic & MIFARE DESFire EV1(coded)

Output length when using Clock/Data:

  • When using Mifare Classic, the output length is 8 digits

  • When using Mifare DESFire, the output length is 12 digits

Standard LED function:

  • When the reader is provided with power, the LED color is Red.

  • When the LED connection is switched to GND, the LED color is Green

Standard IO function:

  • When using Mifare Classic, the output length is 8 digits

  • A standard configured card reader does not use the extra IO functionality. When this
function is needed, you need to order another card reader. See chapter 1.3.3 & 1.3.4

Programmable:

  • The card reader is not programmable.

1.3.2 Chip Serial Number (CSN)

Part number: 801-5102

Default Card reader protocol:

  • An Orbit based on Clock/Data.

Output length based on Clock/Data:

  • The length of the Chip Serial Number (CSN) is 4 byte swapped (10 digits decimal)

Attention! When using a 7 byte (random) CSN, the card reader must communicate with a Polyx. In this case you need to order another card reader. See chapter 1.3.3 & 1.3.4

Attention! When using a 7 byte (random) CSN, the card reader must communicate with a Polyx. In this case you need to order another card reader. See chapter 1.3.3 & 1.3.4

Standard LED function:

  • When the reader is provided with power, the LED color is Red.

  • When the LED connection is switched to GND, the LED color is Green

Standard IO function:

  • A standard configured card reader does not use the extra IO functionality. When this function is needed, you need to order another card reader. See chapter 1.3.3 & 1.3.4

1.3.3 Sirius i-30 programmable using configuration cards

Part number: 801-5103

  • After connecting the Power to the card reader, the LED turns blue. A configuration card is needed to turn the reader in operational mode.

  • You can order a configuration card via TKH Security BV. To create 'custom' configuration cards extra costs will be calculated.

1.3.4 Sirius i-30 programmable using PC application and configuration cards

Part number: 801-5104

  • After connecting the Power to the card reader, the LED turns blue. A configuration card is needed to turn the reader in operational mode.

  • The card reader is fully programmable using a PC application and you’re able to create your own configuration cards.

2 Installation and use

2.1 Location

  • Determine the location where the Sirius card reader should be installed. There is a maximum cable length between the reader and door controller.

  • Exception: using an external power supply, you can increase the achievable distance between the door controller and card reader.

  • Install the reader with a minimum lateral distance of 20 cm from each other.

  • The reader should preferably NOT be installed to metal. If necessary, use a spacer, see chapter 1.2.

2.2 Mounting

Mount the card reader preferably on a flat surface.

  • Mount the back plate of the card reader to the appropriate place.
If placed on a stone wall, drill two 6mm holes intended for the plugs.
If placed on a wooden surface, drill two 3mm holes.

  • The screw hole of the card reader should be placed on the underside. (see Picture 4)

  • Pull the cable through the mounting plate (and the spacer, if applicable) of the Sirius reader.

  • Screw the back plate of the reader with adequate screws. The head of the screw must be at least 6 mm wide.

  • When not removed, remove the orange colored film of the Buzzer.

  • Click the front of the card reader at the top of the mounting plate

  • Attach the front of the card reader to the mounting plate with the supplied 'special mounting bolt.

3 Connection

Remark! Depending on the configuration of the card reader, the inputs and outputs of the card reader can be used.

3.1 Sirius i30 connector lay-out

  • Connect the cable as shown in this chapter

The reader accepts a supply voltage of 5.0 - 16.0 VDC.
A higher input voltage results in a lower power consumption and provide cost-effective wiring with a smaller diameter of the conductor.
When using an external power supply, it must comply with the SELV guidelines.

3.2 If door controller Polyx

The Sirius card reader can be connected in two ways with the Polyx: directly or by using an Adapterboard

For optimal communication, it is recommended to have the latest version of one of the following operating system

  • 2.6 JFSS2

  • 3.3 UbiFS

Remark! Browse to the polyx to see the version information. For more information about the versions, see the KP_Install_update_Polyx manual.

3.2.1 Direct connection (RS485)

Recommended cable type between a Polyx and the Sirius card reader is: (see Section 4.1 for more information)

  • CAT5 UTP four twisted pairs of 24AWG copper conductors

  • CAT6 UTP four twisted pairs of 24AWG copper conductors

A direct connection (without using an Adapterboard) between the Sirius card reader and a Polyxâ„¢ is NOT possible when:

  • Sirius and Polyxâ„¢ are installed in different buildings and thus the connection leaves the building or

  • the wiring is no UTP cable (CAT5 or CAT6) or

  • an existing (non UTP) cable is reused or

  • overvoltage protection for the card reader is required or

  • An external power supply is required for the card reader.

If any of the above conditions applies, see chapter 3.2.2.

Polyx, directly connected to a Sirius card reader:

3.2.2 Connection using an Adapterboard

Recommended cable type between a Polyx and the Sirius card reader, using an Adapterboard is:

  • Shielded cable with twisted pairs

If a direct connection is not possible, an Adapterboard must be placed between Polyx and the Sirius card reader.
Adapterboard and Polyx are connected with a default UTP cat5 cable (or higher) (plug connection).

Connecting wires as shown in the diagrams below.

  • Connect GND of the Adapterboard to the local Earth.

  • Connect the shield of the ground cable to the GND connection of the Adapterboard.

Do not place any jumpers! For more information see the Adapterboard manual..

3.3 If door controller Orbit

Recommended cable type between the Orbit and Sirius card reader:

  • CKY 3x2x0,14mm²

  • CKY 4x2x0,14mm²

  • CAT5 UTP four twisted pairs of 24AWG copper conductors

  • CAT6 UTP four twisted pairs of 24AWG copper conductors

3.3.1 Connecting with UTP cable

3.3.2 Connection with CKY 3x2x0,14mm²
