What is an EDID?

EDID is information about supported display resolutions and modes that is stored on display such as Monitor, TV or projector.

The NVIDIA driver reads the display EDID when it detects an attached display. From this information it will determine the preferred display timings and supported modes.

How do you Manage the EDID?

The NVIDIA Quadro Driver can store the EDID from a display and save it to file. Instead of reading the EDID from the display we can now read it each time from file.

The NVIDIA driver can:

  • Export the EDID to file.

  • Load EDID from file

  • Unload the EDID.

What are the benefits to Managing the EDID?

Managing the EDID is useful in the following use cases:

  • In A/V environments with switchers and/or cable extenders the display EDID may be lost.

  • Protecting against hot plug events.

  • In Windows 7 and 8 if you unplug a display that will trigger a hot plug event which may reconfigure your displays.

    • With the EDID being read from file the OS will always think the display is attached.

  • You can use it to fake a display being attached for testing.

Steps to Export the EDID.

  1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel and go to the "View system topology" page

  1. Select the EDID Link beside one of the Display Connectors - This will open the Manage EDID page

  1. Select the Export tab.

  1. Select Export EDID - you will be prompted to save the EDID.

Note: The EDID will be saved in a clear text file as a string of hex characters:

Steps to Load an EDID

  1. Go to NVIDIA Control Panel -> View system topology page -> EDID

  1. Select the EDID you want to load using the "Browse button"

  1. Select the port or ports(s) you want to load the EDID to.'

  1. Press Load EDID - The display name may change if you loaded a monitor EDID with a different name

  1. Press Cancel to exit the Manage EDID menu

  1. View system topology page will indicate it is reading the EDID from file by showing "E" logo and "EDID (File)" beside the display.

Useful Tips

If you load the EDID onto a port that does not have a display attached make sure you select the correct port. Each physical port on the Quadro Card supports different connection types:

For example a Display Port can support: VGA, DVI-D, DisplayPort and HDMI connections

If you load the EDID onto a DVI port but later attach an HDMI display you may see two displays attached to the same physical display (only one display can be active at any one time).

Steps to Unload an EDID

  1. Go to NVIDIA Control Panel -> View system topology page -> EDID

Select the display and press Unload EDID.
